     The following are the rules and policies which guide our Physical Education program. These are reviewed at the beginning of each quarter with all students during the Course Selection process.

COURSE SELECTION

     Each student will be given the opportunity to select from a variety of course offerings at the beginning of each quarter. Activities can include individual activities, team sport activities, and fitness programs. Students should give thought to their selection, as the changing from one activity to another during the quarter is not permitted. Students who do not select a course within the first two weeks will be assigned to a class by the Subject Area Leader.

DRESS FOR ACTIVITY

     All students must have the following pieces of apparel in order to participate in class:

          SNEAKERS: no boots, sandals, heels, platforms, clogs or     "flip-flops";
          SHORTS or SWEATPANTS: appropriate length and style, no "pajama pants";
          SHIRT: appropriate length and style, no obscene or vulgar graphics.
          JACKET or SWEATSHIRT: appropriate for wear on cold weather days.

     All students must change and change into proper clothes in order to participate. If a student does not change for class, they will receive a "0" grade for the day, unless legally excused. In addition, students must change in the locker room, not outside, in stairwells, or the gymnasium. failure to dress in the locker room will result in a "zero" grade for the day.

GRADING

     Student grades are based on components of active participation (50%), skill development (25%) attitude (15%), and cognitive knowledge (10%). An individual teacher may utilize a grading "rubric", which would be explained at the beginning of the quarter.

GRADUATION REQUIREMENT

     In order to graduate from Norwalk High School,  a student must take and pass 8 Physical Education courses during their four years. Each quarter-long course is worth 1/8 of a credit; therefore, students need 1 full credit to graduate.

LOCKER ROOM

     All students are expected to report to the locker room before the tardy bell rings. Students with a "tardy pass" will report to their Physical Education teacher, not the locker room. The teacher will honor all legitimate passes. The locker room shall be used in order to change from street clothes into gym attire. If a student is not dressing for class, they should report directly to their activity area, not the locker room. Students must change and report to their teacher within 5 minutes (outside classes) or 3 minutes (inside classes), or they will be marked tardy.
STUDENTS SHOULD BRING A LOCK AND SECURE THEIR BELONGINGS IN THE LOCKER ROOM. NORWALK HIGH SCHOOL AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION STAFF CANNOT BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR VALUABLES LEFT IN THE LOCKER ROOM.

MAKE-UP POLICY

     Any excused absence or tardy can be made up. A schedule of make-up dates will be posted in the Physical Education area near the close of each quarter. Unexcused absences, tardies, or "unprepared-for-classes" CANNOT be made up. Remember, Physical Education is an active participation subject, and therefore, "active participation" is 50% of your grade. Frequent absences and tardies will lower your grade. Any excused absence that is not made up during the quarter converts to a "0" at the close of the marking period.

MEDICAL ISSUES

     Prolonged medical problems that would involve being excused from Physical Education classes for prolonged periods of time must be handled through the nurse's office.

SCHOOL RULES

     No students are allowed in the Physical Education area (locker rooms, gymnasium, pool, activity areas) unless they are scheduled for Physical Education that period. Any student found in these areas without a pass will be turned over to their House office for disciplinary action.

     All Norwalk High School and Norwalk Board of Education policies will be enforced in the Physical Education area. These include the wearing of hats in the building, possession of beepers and/or cell phones, listening to "walkman" type devices, eating in class, as well as others.
