Students may select the
activity of their choice for each quarter. Here are descriptions of each
activity offered:
AEROBICS This unit offers students the opportunity to participate in a variety of aerobic workouts. Activities include Tae-Bo, Pilates, "Cardio Boot Camp", Yoga, and a wide selection of other activities. Information regarding target heart rate and levels of fitness is also included. ARCHERY This course introduces students to this lifetime sport. There is a strong emphasis on required safety skills, as well as archery terminology and scoring. Students are also exposed to archery competition as part of the course. BADMINTON This is an introductory course which will expose students to various elements of badminton including grip, stance, serving, types of shots, shot selection and strategy. Scoring and tournament play are also included. BASKETBALL This unit serves as an introduction to this team activity. Basic principles of offense and defense, as well as team play are covered. Various games and modified games are played during the quarter. BIGGER FASTER
STRONGER (BFS) This activity will introduce students to the Bigger Faster Stronger weight training protocol. Warm-up activities, core lifts, auxiliary lifts, stretching, record keeping, spotting and safety considerations are also included. CANOEING This unit will introduce students to this form of aquatics. Safety precautions are covered, as well as various strategies to maneuver a canoe through a series of obstacles, as well as in "open water." CIRCUIT TRAINING This unit introduces students to this form of weight training. The principles of target heart training, exercise selection, and weight selection are included. Students will participate in a variety of "circuits" during the quarter. CRICKET Students are exposed to the "international" game, which has characteristics similar to both baseball and hockey. Rules and safety considerations are included, as well as the various skills required by the pitcher ("bowler") and team members. FITNESS WALKING This unit offers students an opportunity to develop a personal fitness program through walking. Target heart rates, pacing, and modifications (i.e. hand weights) are introduced. GOLF Students are introduced to the basics of this lifetime activity in this course. Grip, stance, and club selection are covered, as well as rules of play and golf etiquette. Alternative "golf-type" activities may be included. LACROSSE This unit serves as an introduction to this team activity. History of the game, as well as safety and proper use of equipment is covered. The skills of throwing and catching, as well as offensive and defensive skills and strategies are included. (Note: STX Ball equipment is used during this course.) LIFEGUARD TRAINING This course will train students to become American Red Cross certified Lifeguards. Skills include in-water skills, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, First Aid, Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Training, Oxygen Administration, and Preventing Disease Transmission. (Note: students must be 15 years of age, and pass all water skills, classroom/dry land skills, and a written exam in order to get certified.) PICKLEBALL Students are introduced to this alternative "net game" (which has characteristics of tennis and racquetball) during the quarter. Proper use of equipment and safety considerations are covered, as well as racquet grip, stance, forehand/backhand shots, and scoring. SNORKELING As part of an aquatics unit, students are exposed to snorkeling. Proper use of equipment, including masks, fins, and snorkels is covered. Also included is gauging proper fit, proper use of fins, and clearing a snorkel after submerging. SOCCER This course offers students an introduction to this team activity. Skills include dribbling, passing, ball control, positioning, strategy, and team play. Game play is featured during this unit. SPEEDBALL This activity combines skills found in soccer as well as basketball. The skills of passing and moving the ball, as well as ways to "convert" the game are included. STRENGTH BALL
TRAINING This activity will introduce students to the use of Swiss balls and medicine balls as a means of developing "core" strength. A variety of exercises for the upper and lower body, as well as proper equipment selection and safety will be included in the course. SWIM FITNESS This course allows students to experience a variety of swim workouts which are geared to all levels of ability. Many forms of workouts are included such as water walking, lap swimming, and circuit training. Target heart rates and levels of exercise intensity are also discussed. SWIM INSTRUCTION In this course, students are taught the proper mechanics for learning how to swim. A variety of methods, including the use of flotation devices and other apparatus is included. The goal is for students to reach a level of comfort and some form of propulsion in the water by the conclusion of the course. TENNIS In this activity, students are taught the basic skills of grip, serve, forehand and backhand play, court positioning and scoring. Tennis etiquette and strategies for both singles and doubles play is included. TOUCH / FLAG FOOTBALL In this activity, students are exposed to a variety of skills culminating in game play. Passing, catching, offensive strategy, flag "pulling" and defensive strategy are included. TRACK and FIELD Students are exposed to a number of skills in this unit. Sprinting, middle distance and long distance activity are included, as well as the field events of shot put, discus, and long jump are included. VOLLEYBALL Students in this activity learn the basic rules and regulations for game play. The skills of serving, passing and setting are included, as well as positioning and team play. Game play and tournament play serve as culminating activities for this unit. WATER POLO In this activity, students are exposed to this fast paced game. Basic rules and safe play are emphasized. The principles of offense and defense, passing, shooting and team play are included. Modified equipment is available for students who require some swimming assistance. WEIGHT TRAINING Participants in this unit learn the fundamentals of strength training. A thorough orientation to the available equipment begins the unit, followed by instruction in the elements of program design. Samples of several types of programs are available; the goal in this unit is for students to make educated choices about designing a program which will allow students to reach a predetermined goal.
