Demonstrating a Critical Stance

 

  1. Making Predictions
    1. You must read the passage carefully.  Make sure you understand what has happened so far.
    2. Make a good guess.
    3. The answer is not written in the passage.  Choose the answer that makes the most sense.
  2. Analyzing the Author’s Craft
    1. Check to see what literary devices the author uses.
    2. Some literary techniques writers use are similes, metaphors, and flashbacks.
  3. Distinguishing Between Fact and Opinion
    1. Can you prove it?
    2. Does the statement show one person’s feelings about a subject?  It is an opinion.
  4. Synthesizing and Extending Information
    1. When you figure out what sentence might come at the end or beginning of a passage, make sure you understand the passage.
    2. Try to think of the character in a passage as someone you know.
    3. Figure out what values, customs, and beliefs are important to the character.
