Do you know someone (teacher, principal, counselor, social worker, psychologist, parent, mentor) who has made a difference in the life of a gifted child, going above and beyond in order to support, educate, and/or otherwise care for a gifted student?  Please consider nominating that person for the new “Gifted Kids Hero” award.  This statewide award program is managed by Joan Glass on behalf of the CT Association for the Gifted.

The Academically Talented Department will host a workshop titled “Hearts and Minds:” Finding Top Educational Experiences for Your Gifted Child Kindergarten through College on Thursday, May 21, 2009 at 7pm at Roton Middle School. The FREE presentation by Wenda Sheard, President of SENG (Supporting the Emotional Needs of the Gifted), will focus on defining what constitutes a top educational experience according to great educational philosophers and according to contemporary thinkers. Stephanie Walsh, a fifth grader at Marvin School, was nominated by her Academically Talented teacher Jean Fratino for the Nicholas Green Award.  The Nicholas Green Award goes to one gifted student in Connecticut who has demonstrated a commitment to community service and civic involvement.

Joan Glass would like to recognize the teacher and social workers named in this article.  The article describes the process that we have used in Norwalk to develop a socio-emotional support program for gifted, “at-risk” children at Rowayton and Columbus.

On November 17th at 7:00 p.m. the Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth will conduct an informational meeting for parents of gifted children.  Please see http://cty.jhu.edu/ts/tests.html to determine whether your child may be eligible for this program; the program provides enrichment opportunities for gifted children.  This meeting will take place at 300 Highland Avenue at the Center for Global studies at Brien McMahon High School in Norwalk.

Minds in Motion events
The first Minds in Motion event of this school year will be Saturday, November 8 at the Tyl Middle school in Oakdale/Montville, in Southeastern Connecticut.  Information is now available online.  A fill able .pdf file of the registration brochure is also available, which you can fill out online, print and mail in with your check - very easy! 

The registration deadline has been extended to Friday, October 31, so register today!
